Herald Opinion and Analysis

Although there are talks of breakthroughs in the research into possible HIV treatment, the bleak truth is that right now there is no cure for HIV. ARVs enhance the quality and length of life for the infected but with international donor funding drying up, the country cannot keep adding to the numbers of people who need treatment. The current situation where we have high infection rates is just untenable. With the infected needing ever improving services and support systems simply cannot afford to have the bill continue to increase. The continued high incidence rate of HIV infection within the marriage institution is a reflection of the prevailing attitude that getting married is a method of preventing infection. Nothing could be further from the truth. Last year statistics revealed that married women had the highest rate of HIV infection compared to any other demographic grouping. Results of a medical study linking high infection rates to the use of hormone-based contraceptives may just be the explanation for that phenomenon.

Male circumcision has been a major topic around the world given the benefits unearthed by researchers.Three random controlled trials have consistently shown that male circumcision is 60 percent effective in reducing HIV incidence. The trials were done at Orange Farm in South Africa (semi-urban) Rakai, Uganda (rural) and Kisumu, Kenya (urban). World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNAids guidelines recommend male circumcision for HIV prevention in generalised epidemic settings where HIV prevalence is high and circumcision is low. However, while discussion has centred on the potential 60 percent protection of males against HIV, it has spectacularly failed to articulate how females can also benefit from the circumcision of their counterparts. Population Services International-Zimbabwe male circumcision manager Mr Roy Dhlamini recently said women derive numerous benefits from male circumcision.

THE Grain Marketing Board has re-committed itself in responding to HIV and Aids and has pledged to scale up its current workplace interventions as part of its contribution to an Aids-free generation. Addressing guests - mostly GMB employees - at the organisation's belated World Aids Day commemorations held in Harare last week, GMB general manager Mr Albert Mandizha urged all his staff to have individual roles in curbing prevalence of HIV.
"I am appealing to all members of staff to feel free to get tested as this is the gateway into positive living. We can only access treatment when we know our status and equally stay negative if one knows his status as well," said Mr Mandizha.

Zimbabweans have been urged to embrace circumcision to reduce their chances of contracting HIV and Aids. Speaking at a welcoming ceremony for the visiting South African King of the Xhosa, Zwelonke Sigcawu and his delegation in Mbembesi last Friday, Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu hailed the Xhosa people in Umguza for observing their culture.
King Zwelonke is the first Xhosa King to visit Zimbabwe since the Xhosa people migrated from South Africa more than hundred years ago. He came with members of the royal family. Minister Mpofu said Government has adopted circumcision as an HIV preventive measure strategy had started a long time ago with the Xhosa.
The minister said he was strong and healthy because he had been circumcised and leant a lot of things from the Xhosa.

It does not choose colour or creed, sex or age and neither does it have a choice of religion or status.

AIDS can be acquired by anyone. Infecting some of us and affecting most. Leaving inerasable marks in the lives of many, sending others six feet under the ground. United we stand, divided we fall, so lets stand together and fight to combat HIV and AIDS. Together we can make a difference into an HIV free era.
It has been said that HIV is spread through various ways but I do believe in what the internet says.

The internet has enlightened millions of people about the actual cause of AIDS.
It is a condition caused by the HIV virus and transmitted in body fluids, which will break down the sufferers natural defences against infection hence the CD4 count will be lowered. The virus enters the body as a result of sexual activities among other ways and will eventually develop into AIDS.
The virus mainly infects cells and these cells are those that carry a molecule called CD4 on their surface. The CD4 is found on immune cells, most particularly on T-helper cells, which co-ordinate the immune system and on macrophages, cells which roam the body engulfing bacteria and other germs.

WASHINGTON — President Obama won plaudits from AIDS groups that have criticized him in the past with his announcement on Thursday that he is seeking additional federal money for efforts to prevent and treat the disease in the United States and globally.“So make no mistake, we are going to win this fight,” Mr. Obama told an audience of international activists, celebrities and lawmakers of both parties assembled at George Washington University for the annual World AIDS Day, 30 years after the disease was identified. “But this fight is not over — not by a long shot.”
